Courte biographie
Christine Pullein-Thompson was the daughter of writer Joanna Cannan and Captain Harold "Cappy" Pullein-Thompson. She was part of a large literary family that included her maternal aunt May Cannan, a poet, and cousin Gilbert Cannan, a novelist-playwright. She and her three siblings all became writers. Along with her twin Diana Pullein-Thompson and other sister Josephine Pullein-Thompson, she was the author of many horse and pony books aimed mostly at girls, a genre established by their mother in the 1930s, which sold millions of copies. Christine also wrote a number of stories for younger children. The sisters also wrote a collective autobiography, Fair Girls and Grey Horses: Memories of Country Childhood. Christine married Julian Popescu in 1954 and had four children, one of whom, Charlotte Popescu, also wrote children's pony books.

Most short story collections I have read have been a mixed bag of good and awful, but this collection was a delight. The author/editor included works by several authors I was unfamiliar with, and only one story which I disliked, a chapter from Animal Farm (which I'd previously read). Recommended to horse-lovers and others who just like a good short story collection.

Standard tale of an unwanted puppy who finds herself without a home. Some animal cruelty is described, so it may not be best for very young or tender-hearted readers.

This is an excellent book, a little creepy and eerie, but that makes it even more fun.
Jean and Angus have been sent to stay at their Aunt Mary's and cousin Fiona's house in the great Ireland, and something feels wrong. Why aren't they permitted into Aunt Mary's attic? Something is definitely not right... Luckily, however, Jean has her pony Phantom to keep her occupied and away from the subject- until someone kidnaps him! Angus finds himself face to face with desperate criminals who kidnap him, and Phantom. Will Jean ever see her horse, or her brother again?
I really do like this book, it sends chills up your spine, which makes it better, because you don't know whether you like it or not in places, making it an easy read, that I know you will like.
