This is a devotional book, intended to be used during Lent, with options at the back for weekly group discussion questions.

There's a short passage of Scripture (sometimes more than one) for each day of Lent, up to and including Easter Sunday. Most are from the Gospels but there are also relevant quotations from other books of the Bible. These are followed by commentary from the author.

The commentaries, which include personal and other anecdotes, are incisive, sometimes poignant, and almost all full of thought-provoking insights.

Highly recommended.

This book is written as a fictional correspondence with the Apostle Paul. Different members of a church have been struggling with some of his writing, and want to ask him some probing questions.
Some of the letters are a little tongue-in-cheek, but most ask serious and important questions.

The replies are cleverly composed. The point is made that some of Paul's advice was written to specific people, not necessarily intended for the worldwide church for two millennia. In some of these fictional letters there’s historical context and clear explanations which make a great deal of sense.

This is not an academic tome; the fictional and often light-hearted style ensures that it could be read by anyone with an interest in the topics. I’d recommend this to anyone who would like to understand the New Testament better, and Paul’s writing in particular.

This is a devotional book by Bridget Plass, wife of the well-known humorous Christian author Adrian Plass.

It's a six-week focus on how much God loves us. It's designed as a Lenten devotional, beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Easter Sunday. It's not designed to be read in one sitting, but one section at a time, over a month and a half.

The Bible passages are short, the commentary not much longer but full of wisdom and insight. There are a few anecdotes, some of them quite moving, and lots of the author's thoughts and ideas. Through it all comes the over-riding awareness that God really does love us, culminating of course in the ultimate act of love on Good Friday around 2000 years ago.

I first read it during October and November 2005; I enjoyed just as much the second time around, when I actually read it during Lent, one reading per day. I enjoyed it again, and got more out of it when I read it again during Lent 2014, and again in 2021.

Very highly recommended.
