The concept for this novel is a good one, but the execution leaves something to be desired. As an avid baseball fan, I think I went into this experience with my hopes too high. If you begin by thinking you will be reading a cute, loose story about Cooperstown, New York, I think you'll be okay. I wouldn't recommend this read if you had the same kind of baseball background and expectations I had.

This fits in a sort of genre that tends to sound appealing to me in descriptions but often disappoint in execution: portraits of small towns (this time Cooperstown, New York, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame) with separate chapters devoted to the town's quirky characters. This one added a deep, dark secret that dramatically affected the lives of several of the town's leading citizens but turned out to be something that's hard to believe would have had such an impact.
