An account of all the narrow gauge locomotives brought into capital stock of the German State Railways (but excluding private lines). Narrow gauge steam engines were put into class 99 by the Deutsche Reichsbahn, so this makes a convenient way of ending Eisenbahn Journal's part-work listing all classes of German steam locomotives in the 20th Century.

This volume of Eisenbahn Journal's 'Dampflok Report' deals mainly with the bewildering variety and history of the DRG's Einheitsloks ('standard locomotives') for freight, and their eventual evolution into the 'Kriegsloks' of World War II. However, the story is extended further into the modifications and rebuilds carried out in both Germanies in the post-war era. The efforts by the East German DR to run these engines on various forms of pulverised coal are noteworthy.
