What really surprised me in this book, was the fact that John, a big bad alpha with more than 200 years of experience behind his back, couldn't take charge.

John also admitted to Matt right away that he was using him, yet later on John couldn't - for the life of him - figure out why Matt didn't rush forward declaring his undying love. Well, go figure...

This one is leaving me a little conflicted. There were spots in the story where I struggled to connect to the characters and the writing. Then it would grab me, and I would be fully immersed.

Maybe some of it had to do with some of the wording that was used, especially in the beginning. I have to admit, that I hate reading "his sex"... Unfortunately this happened a few times in the story. Honestly, call a penis a penis, a dick or a .... Just don't use the above...please!

Once I overcame that issue, i started to enjoy the story. I was half-what expecting a "mated" story with the way it started, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn't. Overall it was an entertaining read.

This is an amazing book. I loved it because of its many surprises, great characters, and the sense of wonder and quiet analysis that somehow comes through in the writing and fits the main character perfectly. There is the odd humorous observation and interlude as well, which only makes it an even better story.

Matt is a graduate student who has a lot more brains than common sense. I loved seeing the world through his eyes. He analyzes everything, comes up with the cleverest solutions to the weirdest problems, and is desperate to find "the One". He instinctively trusts John Channing, despite all the evidence to the contrary. His brain tells him he needs to be careful, and leads him to quite a few incorrect conclusions where his relationship with Channing is concerned. His heart sends a clear message from the very start, but he has trouble believing it.

The book basically tells the story of Matt finding out that he can trust his instincts and what they tell him not just about the man he has fallen in love with, but his relationship with that man. A very interesting read.

Ok there is no BDSM in this book, just some hot dirty sex. And no abusive relationship like some reviewers stated. No one was abused or raped or manipulated.
Story is simple, we don't get much of character development here; more of Tom than Law. Yes we learn more as we go along but not much. The book isn't long; we don't have enough pages to accommodate both sex and the inner thoughts of Law.

cocky rich MC, grease monkey, bitchy female figure, public sex, and an MC without a smartphone!!

This short story struck a chord with me. This is how I enjoy m/m characters to be written. They were men who didn't lose their testosterone once their relationship progresses. I really sympathized with Tom because i felt like Tom as I read deeper into this fabulous love story. Sometimes I just need a non-paranormal m/m story and this book definitely fulfilled all the requirements I usually like in m/m stories. This is story stayed in my head even after I finished reading. Excellent job, Jez Morrow.

3 or 4 stars?! I guess I'll go with 4 because I did enjoy the book, but I had a real hard time with Law at the beginning and through the dub/non-con scene. His explanation at the end didn't really make that scene any better since I don't understand why you'd do something like that to someone you supposedly love. I wouldn't say that Law grew on me as I still didn't really love him at the end, but I didn't hate him the way I had in the beginning. The whole Winston/Cynthia/Wells resolution seemed rather abrupt and too easy esp. since I knew what was going to happen when Tom overheard Winston and Law speaking at the reception. I also knew who sent the blackmail video, but this book obviously wasn't supposed to be a great whodunnit/mystery. All of that being said, I still enjoyed the book, and if I owned it instead of borrowing it, I'd definitely re-read it.

If you love a good alpha male character this is a story for you. In many ways this tale was a lot like the old Harlequin romances I read years ago, be it a m/m version. Very enjoyable, if a bit predictable.

Simply adored this! From beginning to end, I was cursing anything that had me putting my Kindle down and stop reading.

Highly recommend to fans of m/m romance. :)

I love Jez Morrow's books and this was no exception! Engaging sci-fi story about enemies turned lovers. Desdaine was awesome, vulnerable yet the loyal soldier. And Laren was perfect for him.

Oh yes, I love this book. There's just something about Jez Morrow's writing that just flat out does it for me. I think this is my third (or fourth) time re-reading this, and I'm sure it won't be the last. :)

Ok. I try not to be overly harsh on books, and I really do not try to say, "don't buy this". After all, if I don't like a book, there is someone else who will love it.

But this book (I use this term loosely) really is just a novella with looks of angst and sex scenes. What is really disappointing is that it could have had so much potential. I think that's what frustrating about this novel, I wanted so much more and the author.

This one just left me wanting. And while price should not be compared to length, but the price for this compared to how long it was was not porportional.

I just adore this book! It is hot, hot, hot and so passionate. I have never met a more powerful, sexy Alpha male. Ms. Morrow made that perfect balance between arrogant and asshole. If he had been any more arrogance then I would have spent most of the time mad at Law.

I could have liked it to be longer and more complex.

mmmmm, I almost want to start reading it for time number 3.

A really hot one - the love story developed a little fast for me (nearly insta love - but only nearly...). It had some humor and I liked the cinderella twist here - although it seems to be the third or fourth one featuring a mechanic...I see a pattern here...

This was another re-read for me and I added it to my favorites shelf. It was just so HOT and re-reading it and already knowing the ending that Law was already in love with Tom at the wedding made it even more beautiful and passionate.

Yummy!

The story's beginning was very promising. It was all right until they hid with the werewolves. I wasn't too convinced of the way Matt fit in with them. And I couldn't understand Vic's reasons for anything he did. From that point on, I kept getting thrown off from the flow of the story and couldn't get back in.

This one took me by surprise actually. There are some parts of it that are a little far fetched but for the most part this is just fun and easy to read. It's a feel good story and will definitely make a good comfort read.

Devon rules a rich province of the mighty Raenthe Empire, but in his dreams the young Sovereign does not play the master in bed. Lord of everything, in the depths of the night, Devon just wants to surrender to a stronger power, a dominating man.The star of all Devon’s wet dreams is the magnificent desert man, Xan, the champion gladiator. Devon was the one who sentenced Xan to die in the arena as an example to all his rebellious desert kind. Devon was also the one who pardoned Xan and gave him his freedom. When Xan accompanies Devon as the Sovereign’s guardsman on a dangerous journey into the wild lands, it is raw passion, betrayal and impossible desire that reign over both men.

Okay, shortish, story about a very rich man (Law) and a mechanic who used to date Law's cousin. I could have used some more character development. I didn't quite get what was so good about Law myself.

I haven’t read all the books by Jez Morrow, true, but till now I haven’t found one that I didn’t like. Mostly paranormal stories about shapeshifters, she did well also with contemporary romance, but I think the werewolves are her preferred playfield.

When Matt meets John, it’s a bad night for him: he has just dumped his cheating boyfriend, and in-living partner, and he needs to rebound. John is alone in the street like him, and like him he needs something, someone. They have rough sex in the street followed but more sweet sex in Matt’s shitty apartment and like a stray dog who chose his home, John asks Matt if he can stay, and Matt has not really good reason to say no: no matter that John is carrying a gun, no matter that he is a drug addicted trying to detoxing, no matter that he doesn’t really know him aside from what John told him, that he is a police detective who needs to testify on a process. Those are no really good reasons to kick out a man who is always able to make sweet sex with him, that is caring and cuddling, that makes Matt feels safe and loved, feelings that his former lover Cord never was able to make him achieve.

I think Matt is a love’s deprived soul in a desperate need of a family: a single child of a single parent, and now orphaned, he has never had a real old fashioned family; plus Matt is a bit old fashioned himself, he believes in romance and love, and he wants a pretty ordinary life, the only not so ordinary thing him being gay. Even if he knows John only since few days, he feels a soul mate in him, John is very old fashioned, always out to protect him, with the right dose of jealousy, but it’s not a wrong jealousy, just that much to make Matt feel wanted and cherished. Plus John has the family thing in him, his only presence makes a shitty apartment feel like home, Matt wants to get back to him everyday, knowing that John will be there, waiting for him.

John is in deep trouble and his life is everything other than ordinary, but he has never once involved Matt in it, other than asking him for a place to crash. And even when everything seems to go down south, John is always able to see the positive side and make Matt smile. John had an hard life, but that life hasn’t hardened his heart: he is still plenty capable of loving and he is redirecting this love towards Matt, right in the moment when he needs it more. The problem is that, while he can fulfill Matt’s desire to be loved, he is not really able to accomplish the task to giving him an ordinary life: if Matt wants to love John, he has to make a choice.

I like as the author plays with the werewolf theme, John is a shapeshifter through and through but he is also a scarred man, and he is not invincible. In a way, Matt, with his cute and little body, is way stronger than John, and he will become the mainstay of their relationship.

One thing I really like about Jez Morrow is that she moves her settings radically from book to book. This time it is set in a quasi Roman time, with an Empire that rules the wild people. Devon rules a rich province of the mighty Raenthe Empire. He frees the gladiator Xan, and also secretly (or not so secretly!) lusts after him. Circumstances put them together. I liked the characterizations, I liked the civilization and it was hot. My only quibble is that it is not a full length book and it's charging $8.32 which is definitely a full book rate, so it loses a star there. I would have liked an epilogue showing them happy at the end, rather than just the struggle to get there. Nevertheless, Jez Morrow is definitely on my auto buy list and this is up to her usual hot standard, I just want more!

This is my second Jez Morrow book and I really enjoyed it. I loved Force of Law better, but I think FoL is going to be one of my all time favorites, so that bar is pretty high!
This still rates as a keeper and a reread for me. This one feels more space opera - we meet Liam and Talon, two space pilots, forced to crew together. Liam is happy go lucky, human, hunk. But Talon is a humanoid who feels he comes from a superior strain and looks down on humans. It's an m/m book, so a relationship ensues. The sex is hot, I loved Talon he just sounded so delicious and Liam was so plain likable. I enjoyed the world setting. i would visit with these boys again...
