NCLA Review - People read the Bible over and over, yet are continually surprised at what they find there, or see familiar verses in a new light. Sometimes the “new light” challenges a previous perspective, provoking further examination, which may change a belief. Americans are exposed to an abundance of religious beliefs (Christian and otherwise). That can increase our confusion when we attempt to discern what the Bible says to us here and now. Is religious diversity a threat—or a gift? The author, a Presbyterian Old Testament Professor Emeritus, offers theological clarity backed by scripture. He addresses biblical “hard sayings,” as well as readers’ overlooked biases, and untenable assumptions. This book is meaty, presenting much historical background of religious practices mentioned in the Bible, but I found the education worth my effort. It would make a great class study book, with thoughtful questions after each chapter that further explore the text, and suggest practical applications. Rating: 3 —DKW… (plus d'informations)
