Stilted & awkward writing style - more like something written for the family & self-published. I learned a few interesting things though about building a house, life in the 1950s, etc. It did get more exciting after she became a widow. And it is in a pretty jacket, nice easy format, short. If you've any interest in memoirs of ordinary people I do recommend this.

Wilmot MacNeil is Scottish, stubborn and determined to purchase a home in the country for his wife Mary. He has little time left after receiving a diagnosis of prostate cancer. He forges ahead buying a beautiful plot of land in Canton Center, Connecticut and proceeds to turn the broken barn into a home. He works on his own; Mary helps on weekends and Mondays around her schedule as librarian in Hartford. Despite his health deteriorating Wilmot continues pushing himself and Mary until the house is livable if not complete.

A wonderful and touching story of a small town rallying around the MacNeils during Wilmot's final year; offering help, support and kindness in many forms. And how Mary grieves but completes her home and learns to live independently (as Wilmot wanted) and thrive with help from her sons, friends and community.

Refreshingly enjoyable.
