The Boy Who Ate More Than the Giant and Other… par Ulf Löfgren

Part of Unicef's Storycraft Book series, intended to "give young people an authentic introduction to the cultural traditions of other children around the world, The Boy Who Ate More Than the Giant contains three tales from Sweden, offering younger children an excellent introduction to the folk tradition of the that country.

Here is the titular The Boy Who Ate More Than the Giant, in which a clever young boys outwits a massive giant on numerous occasions, both as a goatherd, and as the giant's servant. Here is The Master Tailor, in which, after much work, a tailor manages to make nothing of a piece of cloth brought to him by a small gentleman. Finally, here is The Three Billy Goats Bruse (probably better known in its Norwegian variant, The Three Billy Goats Gruff), in which three goat brothers must contend with the troll who lives under the bridge over which they must pass, in order to get to better pastures.

With entertaining tales, and artwork that accentuates their humor, this mini collection was a lot of fun to read! I wasn't sure, at first, that I would like Ulf Löfgren's illustrations, as they seemed a little too cartoon-like for my taste. But as I read on, I perceived that they really suited the tales, and were quite expressive. I particularly liked the portrait of the giant couple plotting, and the full-page picture of the troll hiding under the bridge. Jussi keittää soppaa par Ulf Löfgren

Iki-ihana Jussi on aina ollut minun ja tyttäreni suosikki. Ehdoton suosikkini on nimenomaan tämä Jussi keittää soppaa. Jussi päättää tehdä mumsibumsisoppaa yhdessä ystäviensä kanssa. Karhu haluaisi lisätä pipon soppaan, elefantti pallon ja kettu naulan, mutta Jussi on tarkkana eikä huoli mitä tahansa aineksia soppaansa. Vihdoin soppa valmistuu ja siitä tulee kerrassaan mainio porkkanasipuliherneperunamakkarapersiljasoppa. Suosittelen kirjaa aivan kaikille.

Patrick's Aeroplane par Ulf Lofgren

A story from my childhood. One of the most amazing childrens books ever created. Written & Illustrated by Swedish author Ulf Lofgren it follows Patrick and his quest to rescue his father using an aeroplane he built from borrowed parts. The Illustration is in that 60s/70s Richard Scarryesque style that brings back heaps of memories.
