Robert Klein è un alsaziano agiato, intento ad arricchirsi ulteriormente nella Francia collaborazionista di Pétain. Il caso gli fa scoprire l'esistenza di un suo omonimo di origine ebrea, ricercato dalla polizia a causa delle leggi antisemite. Il suo destino è ormai segnato; a poco a poco il destino dell'altro Klein diventa il suo. Fathers and sons, and political exile. In the fall of 1975, Franco is dying but repression continues. Jules and Eve, living well in exile in France, continue to assist the resistance. The underground calls with a job for either, and Eve goes, to the disappointment of their son, Laurent, visiting his parents at their seaside place in Cherbourg and not getting on well with his father. When a road accident in Spain brings tragedy, the father and son’s conflict worsens. After Laurent and his girlfriend, Julie, pay a harrowing visit to Jules, Julie stays, taking Jules as a lover. Austrian princess Sassard goes to Oxford and trouble ensues. Lots of unanswered questions here--this is Losey, after all. But it is all rather engrossing in an uneasy way. Very good performances all around. Screenwriter Pinter has a great cameo as a television producer Bogarde meets in London.
Very good cast and a few good scenes, but the script fails to create much tension. There's a heist, but we don't see the planning or particularly understand how it works. There's a love story, but it isn't believable. There are good guys and bad guys and there are lots of prisoners wearing ties. Good cinematography, certainly.
