Straightforward chronological account of the US Pacific submarine war. Final chapter on the possible future of the victorious submarine force and nuclear power is good.

If you want a good overview and detail of what each boat was doing in the timeframe of the war, this is it. I am glad I read this one before I read USS Seawolf: Raider of the Pacific. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33548443-u-s-s-seawolf

It is as complete and as dry as a "Reporting, Admiral!" yet glad I read it. I never knew about the total intertwining of the boats, the torpedo problems, and the tactics development.

Required reading for any WWII Submarine buff.

Lockwood was the admiral who led the American submarine force in the Pacific. He thus has first hand knowledge of the planning and execution of submarine warfare against the Japanese Empire. One event he is very proud of is sneaking 9 subs into the Sea of Japan in the late stages of the war. Japan was facing defeat because she no longer had access to her colonies and their raw materials. Most of her merchant marine and navy were at the bottom of the ocean. Only in the Sea of Japan were any of her ships safe because entrances were mined and patrolled.
Admiral Lockwood decided to sneak nine subs in through the mine fields using a new sonar mine detection device and attack Japanese shipping with intention of destroying morale and the last source of food and resources. This is the details of that expedition.
