One of a series of small books by Penguin dedicated each to a particular genre. In this case Egyptian Art. Naturally, trying to cover the 5,000 or so years of Egyptian civilisation in 64 pages, something is going to be a little skimpy. But the book follows the same template of others in the series and has a section on Architecture...including the pyramids and temples. This is followed by a section on sculpture ..including some of the massive temple sculpture. The Egyptians never seemed to break free of the restraints of the stone ...in terms of having their subjects freely walking or engaged in anything more than frontal stock-steady poses like they are posing for a passport photo. Then there is a section on painting....all very stylised and a variation of relief sculpture ...and finally a brief section on "the Minor Arts" which included work in alabaster, gold, jewellery coffins etc. All rather limited and just a snapshot of what the Egyptians achieved over so many years. Can I recognise Egyptian Art after reading this? Well sometimes but maybe only because Egyptian art is generally ...well so Egyptian. with Hieroglyphics and long wig-like hair pieces. But not a bad effort for such a slim volume. Like they others in this series I give it 3 stars.… (plus d'informations)
