Shifting Fate is the story of a royal family in a time of political turmoil. It focuses around Brynn. Brynn is twin to Gideon, and she is slightly less adept with her defensive skills than her brother. This soon changes when she is touched by a Shifter, allowing her magical abilities to manifest. Unfortunately for Brynn, she has little control over her abilities and a tendency to hurt others with them. She makes a quest to ask the Shifters to remove her abilities, only to find that the Shifters are working against her and on the opposing side of the turmoil. Cyrus makes this quest with Brynn, but he has been affected as well. He also has been touched, by another whom was given powers by the Shifters, Eldric. Eldric wants to see the downfall of Brynn's family and sends Cyrus to kill them all. But a connection between Brynn and Cyrus muddies up the water.

Truly, I cannot do this story justice. It is fantastic and a must read. My biggest issue with it is that it ends on such a cliff-hanger and I just want more!

As a not-so-secret romantic, I loved Shifting Fate. Set in a world where fate is predetermined by a Goddess, a force for evil is unleashed to change the destiny of the world.

The current ruling family took control by battling the former Royal Family, who is to say if they were right or not but the legacy of the, murder? made the previous heir bitter which in turn twists him into the present day villain. A flawed bad guy which helps to make this book special.

The royal family has been preparing for the day that the prophesied evil would come. The Queen has the power of foresight but will not say what she has seen.

The heroine is a feisty lady who I believed in. I liked her but I did think she was getting obsessed with a village at one point, I felt like screaming 'get over yourself' at the book. Luckily for my husband nearby I managed to suppress the urge. This by no means should put you off this book. It was a great read and I am glad that I found it.

This was a book worth reading and one of the best that I have read as part of the Fantasy Book Club I started on Amazon discussions.

This story begins with an ousted heir, Eldric, returning to claim his kingdom by killing a king of one of the nations in the realm of Lizon. Lizon is comprised of various nations ruled by other families, but they all defer to the King and Queen of Alii. The royal family of the Kingdom of Alii, is comprised of our heroine Brynn and her 2 older brothers. Her parents seemed to have a magical power to see bits and pieces of the future, and thus the other nations look to them to guidance and authority.

Eldric witnessed the death of his parents when the current king came and killed them, and took over the land. Eldric was saved by a loyal guard and he has been waiting for the day of his revenge every since. He lived as a nomad, picking up tricks and trades here and there, all the while plotting to reclaim his birthright. In contrast, the princess Brynn and her 2 brothers have enjoyed life in Alii, and didn't have a care in the world other than over-protective parents. One of their daily tasks, was to train everyday for some future event, which remained a mystery to them. Their mother, the sightseer, wasn't very forthcoming about her visions. Of course it turns out that this event was the return of the prior king's heir, Eldric.


When the rival returns for his crown, Brynn's brother Gideon, an impatient son, sets off to defeat him on his own. Brynn's brothers excelled in fighting, whereas Brynn was just average fighter. Brynn didn't let that deter her as she followed Gideon on his quest. Along the way, she ends up meeting a hired assassin named Cyrus. Brynn doesn't know, but Cyrus is an associate of the rival Eldric, and he was sent to kill the Brynn's family. We learn that Eldric used magic to force Cyrus' loyalty but for some reason, the magic that was cast upon Cyrus doesn't work well when he is around Brynn. When Brynn is wounded, she is healed with magic that makes it impossible for her to touch anyone but Cyrus. The magic manifests as electrocution whenever she touches anyone except Cyrus. Together Brynn and Cyrus set off to get the magic cast upon them and that also connects them removed.

In their quest, we learn that associates are not really associates, and treachery lies everywhere. This forces our heroine Brynn and Cyrus to depend even more on each other. Brynn and Cyrus develop feelings for each other and they become fiercely protective of one another. I really liked that fact that Brynn wasn't a spoiled princess and that she was a fighter. She was determined to help her family, but she was also loyal to Cyrus.

This story was exciting and it was a fun read. I kept trying to figure out who was bad and who wasn't. I would have liked much more detail about why the current family felt it was their "right" to usurp the prior kingdom. There was brief explanation of atrocities, but how do we know that the current kingdom was much better, because it appears that the current kingdom had magic on their side. It's hard to know the true bad guys when both sides were using shifters or some sort of magical assistance by the "gods".

Despite that, this was a well written story. It was a page turner for me. I just had to know what would happen next. If you are looking for a different sort of fantasy (not werewolves or vampires), this story is for you. I am sure the sequel will be just as exciting.
