I am on page 60 or so in the Kindle edition. Gideon is cutting the scrotum from the body of a dead enemy; he will use this "sac" as a pocket on his jacket. What kind of research suggested this detail? Also, the Catalan's bawdy description of Norman women--they "smell like goats in season . . . " might be accurate, but goodness gracious, hardly "christian." This tends to be a slow read; I do not yet have a sense of where it's going. More to come.

I found myself thinking that (the review title) several times during the novel. Yes, the story was good. Yes, the plot was well thought out (if a bit derivative). Yes, there was mystery and intrigue and a decent level of suspense. But, really, does the inner monologue of the protagonist need to be so long-winded? There were times I found myself skipping entire sets of paragraphs just to get to a point where he stopped thinking something and started doing something. Get on with it! I won't be tracking down the subsequent books in the series.… (plus d'informations)

France, 1254 and to the monastery of St Lazarus Inquisitor Rainiero Sacconir has arrived. Andre, Knight Templar and his scribe, Christian de St Armand, have been sent by the King of France to report to him the findings. Very soon a monk dies and Andre discovers he is not the first. What secrets are the monks hiding.
An interesting story and characters, but at times the pace was slowed down by the religious debates.
