It took months and a phone call to get the University of Calgary to let this one out on interlibrary loan. I was worth it but only for the very academically minded.

I'm not too keen.
For early history, I'd go the marvelous 'The Horse, the Wheel and Language: How Bronze-Age Riders from the Eurasian Steppes Shaped the Modern World' -- which she uses extensively. That's far more in-depth and thoughtful.

Not finding much in this. Her treatment of epic means telling us the story of the Trojan War. It's a survey, but without insights or a pulling-together of history, I'm feeling. And, not to stick the boot in or nothing, but -- I'm going to -- her writing is awkward. Not because of jargon, I'm happy to say, just clumsy.

p.79 Tantalizing refs to an OOP book 'The Deer Goddess Of Ancient Siberia: A Study In The Ecology Of Belief' -- 2ndhand very hard to get and sky high in price. On early steppe art: the ambisexual deer whose antlers are a tree of life. Who can we picket to get this book back in print?
