Was ich glaube?

This beautifully illustrated essay details a man’s simple wishes for making daily life better for himself and those who surround him. The young man went on to become the Pope and was eventually canonized for his many humanitarian efforts. Introduction, Author’s Note.

Large format picture book. Just for today, I will try to live for this day alone, without wishing to solve my life's problems all at once.

Pope John;s personal journal comprises the bulk of the volume, but also included are long letters to his friends and family, many of his prayers and meditations, his last Will and Testament and an Appendix containing motes for his biography.

Beautiful!! A gentle story that expresses the importance of mindfulness and simplicity. The illustrations are soft, flowing, full of fantasy and possibility.

I am always on the lookout for good Catholic books for my school library. This book definitely fits the bill. Beautifully illustrated, this book brings Saint John XXIII's philosophy to life. This great man, had a wonderful, attainable philosophy, which still is useful to today's busy life. Every page provided a different gem and word of wisdom from the beloved pontiff.

The illustrations are a true gem here. Everywhere I look there are symbols and hidden things to explore and ponder the meaning about. What is their symbolism? Is it the illustrator's signature or are they symbolic to Catholicism or Saint John XXIII? The applications with students are endless. While stylistically Bimba Landmann's illustrations are not my favorite (mainly due to the yellow pallor of the subjects), there is so much to look at that I can't help but be intrigued by the narrative the illustrator has created. Landmann created almost a mythical world - a mix between the middle Eastern roots of Catholicism with the Italian world of Rome. I'm not quite sure what this world is, but I know I like it.

Bimba Landmann is at it again with another gorgeous picture book dedicated to Saint John XXIII. His words inspired Landmann's bright illustrations full of color and shadow. Overall, a beautiful book. I don't agree with all of the messages, but the images are what truly makes the story, so I can overlook the text when I have to.½

Based on the daily prayer of Pope St. John XXIII, "Just for Today" is a lavishly illustrated prayer book for young people. The text of the prayer -- a sort of "decalogue for daily living" -- includes simple reminders for how to go about living as a Christian in the world, including "I will not look to improve of discipline anyone other than myself," "I will adapt to circumstances, without expecting circumstances to adapt to my wishes," and "I will do a good deed and tell no one about it."

While grounded in Christian worldview and ethic, even nonbelievers will find something of value to "the good pope's" daily offering of his life.

"Just for Today" is a wonderful addition to any children's library and would make a great First Communion gift.

Disclaimer: I received a free pre-publication version of this book from LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program.

Whimsical, colorful illustrations of a powerful, beautiful prayer written by a saint. Young and old will enjoy this book and come back to it time and again.
