Johnny Cash (1932–2003)

The poems collected in Forever Words are gems by Johnny Cash. Not particularly because they are good poems per se but because they allow the fan into the mind of Cash. I honestly view these poems as lyrical sketches as the poems felt song like in the way they use rhyme and rhythm so deftly. If viewed as lyrics, these song-poems are successful. Mostly about love, and a few dealing with history, perhaps the most poignant song poem in this collection is I Heard on the News, which deals with the Vietnam War. Additionally, I Wish You a Merry Christmas is quite a hoot:

Wat een boek! Een klepper van formaat: groot, zwaar (2,4 kg), dik (374 pagina’s), veel inhoud (125 songs uit 50 jaar muzikant zijn). Als je ook maar een klein beetje fan bent van Cash dan moét je dit prachtige werk in je bezit hebben. Forever Words (The Unknown Poems) was de moeite, dit boek overtreft dat nog eens.

Ik kende wel al wat liedjes van Cash toen ik naar Walk the line (de film) ging maar daarna was ik echt verkocht. Fan for life. Ik kocht niet enkel de soundtrack van de film, de American recordings volgden al snel. Daarna volgde al de rest. Ik zag verschillende docu’s over hem en nu is er dit boek.

Een parel boordevol (privé)foto’s, verhalen, brieven, handgeschreven songteksten én de verhalen erachter. Ongeveer chronologisch en per thema gebundeld. Wat maakt dat je uren, dagen, weken kan verdwalen tussen de pagina’s. En dat je jarenlang terug kan grijpen naar dit boek. Om een specifieke song op te zoek of gewoon even te genieten van de prachtige foto’s.

Wat een man, wat een muziek, wat een boek! Een mooie ode aan een getalenteerde, boeiende man, die alles in zijn leven met zijn hart bezielde. Iemand die we nooit zullen vergeten.… (plus d'informations)

I find it strange how I like this man's music so much. I'm not a country music fan, but I own on CD or vinyl just about every song Cash recorded. I grew up listening to his most popular songs, not by choice, but because my grandmother always had the radio tuned to a country station in the background. So, Cash and his contemporaries were an unconscious, integral part of my childhood that I wouldn't recognize or give credence to until I was closing in on middle-age. In the early '90s, Cash started putting out the American Recordings. My buddy, Woods, reintroduced me to Cash with a gift of one of these CDs. I was hooked. Then I started buying up all the older stuff, and I fell in love. That's about the time I read this book. Cash can tell a story, and he does a fantastic job telling of his remarkable life in this book. This autobiography came out in '76, so there were quite a few years he'd lived since. That one is a masterpiece of autobiography, thus the reason I give this one 4 stars, instead of 5. The newer bio covers a lot more, but if you're a fan, you should read both.… (plus d'informations)
