How often these days can you say that you just read a lovely, sweet story? The YA stories these days seem to be all about angst, teenage lust-triangles, vicious werewolves and vampires. In other words, dark.

This is a ‘supernatural’ story, but entirely different from the norm. Three young witches, Electra, Cassandra and Medea, live in a small village where once witchcraft was the norm. Now, witches are confined to living on ‘the other side of the river’ (read, “the other side of the tracks”) and magic is frowned upon. Never fear, the girls are determined to learn magic spells, even if their Aunt Andromeda frowns on it! Along comes Eric O’Brian, sent to live in the village of Hollow because of his bad hehavious, because you know YA books have to have a ‘boy-interest,’ right?

What happens next is just plain fun. There is funny magic, flying brooms and mystery, oh, my! If you are tired of all the angst so common amongst today’s YA novels, this is definitely the book for you. It’s lovely for your daughter (or son!) but as an adult, I found it just as much fun.

Try it. It is a bit slow at the first, but don’t let that stop you. This is the first of a series (three so far) and I look forward to reading the rest.

Review: 4 stars

General: This book brings some of the simplicity back to YA/NA novels. There is nothing epic status plot wise, nothing that could end the world as we know. No hot steamy sex, no dealing with suicides. It was simply a wonderful look into the world I.D. Blind created that kids as well as teens could easily read and enjoy.

Hollow itself was great and the world was a simple spin to the real world that was easy to get into and even easier to imagine yourself in as you were reading. The book was filled with cute and comedic moments set inside the murder mystery plot, that was also not over the top and extremely believable for the age range of the characters. I enjoyed reading something that dealt with a little less drama and a little more fun for the main characters being the age they were. Eric and Electra had some wonderful and believable interactions.

The negatives were that there were some phrases and things that seemed strange. It was well edited but after looking up the author I found out she is not a native speaker. I believe the book was written in English though so I felt it should have been caught by her editor and those little things switched to read more fluidly. Also, there were some incredibly sweet elements (the meeting) and funny moments (the opener) but overall I felt it did need a little bit of heaviness to make me care about the characters more.

Characters: Electra- Electra is an adorable teen girl. She felt true to the age and what she was. She ranged from cute and sweet to comedic and determined in the flip of a page and the diversity made her enjoyable.

Eric- Eric is the bad boy, because all teens love a bad boy right? Well so do most adults lol. He really wasn’t that bad though. Or perhaps we just haven’t seen it yet as this is a series. Overall he was fun and you could certainly feel his emotions leaping off the page. I’d like him to live up to his bad boy rep a little more next time we see him though.
