Maurice Horn's indispensable reference work remains essential even in our instant data-saturated Internet age. Countless pieces of comic book history remain buried inside this massive, oversized 790 page tome that have yet to make it online. Even though it was updated in 1998 as a multi-volume edition, the original remains fascinating reading some 40 years after its publication. A reference book of comic strips, with an introductory essay followed primarily by reproductions of the strips themselves. No biographical information on the creators is offered, and not much annotation.
A nice encyclopedia-format reference of the last 100 years in American newspaper comics by an authority in the field. Similar to his World Encyclopedia of the Comics, but more recent and not quite as expansive. Good black-and-white illustrations, but the small number of color Sunday page reproductions are sometimes lacking in quality. A good reference.
