Under Eastwood's painstakingly stripped-down direction -- his filmmaking has become the cinematic equivalent of Hemingway's spare though precise prose -- the story emerges as that rarest of birds, an uplifting tragedy.

Rather weak as a movie in its own right, but if viewed as a massive fourth act added to "Casino Royale", not bad at all. And likely it is more or less intended to, judging by its not only sharing both a director and a main plotline, but by making virtually no effort to catch the audience up on the myriad of story elements it picks up from the previous film. If these are fresh in mind, the continuations of the story and character arc are rather pleasing and emotional -- and if they are only vaguely remembered, the film falls more or less flat. As I prefer viewing film series like this in short succession anyway, this is not a big problem for me, and my rating reflects that.½

All'inizio del '45, ormai sul finire della guerra, sei marines vennero fotografati mentre issavano, sulla cima di una collina dell'isola di Iwo Jima, la bandiera americana. Iwo, territorio vitale e sacro giapponese, fu battaglia cruentissima. Quella fotografia divenne il simbolo dell'azione e del cuore di chi combatteva e ci fu chi disse che quello scatto aveva fatto vincere la guerra contro il Giappone. Dei sei marines, tre morirono nel giorni successivi, gli altri tre furono adottati dalla nazione come eroi e come mito. Si chiamavano Ira Hayes, René Gagnon e Jhon Doc Bradley. Ira era un indiano. Nella sua complessa struttura di simmetrie, antinomie e ambiguità, è un film tragicamente spietato sul dolore del mondo, sull'amore, l'amicizia, la dignità in un mondo di perdenti. C'è in questo film – così trasparente e laconico, onesto e innocente in superficie – un pessimismo senza scampo. 4 premi Oscar: film, regia, attrice (Swank, cui dà la voce Laura Lenghi), attore non protagonista (Freeman).

Disturbing, as it was meant to be, and yet unengaging. No matter how many descriptions of car interiors and exteriors, juxtaposed with wounds and sex, this was a very unsexy story. Interesting as an experiment, written in a repetitive style to approach hypnotic, but probably not one I'll ever want to reread

A female boxer gets a grouchy trainer.

The first couple acts are okay - very well performed and shot, sometimes funny, but nothing exceptional. The last 45 minutes or so, which I gather are supposed to be the emotional weight of the film, are boring. It's an excellent story, and I can see how the story it's based on could be very powerful, but they just completely failed to make me feel any connection to it. Possibly because it feels like a separate story from the first half of the movie. And then there's no resolution for Eastwood's character (the main character), which is extremely frustrating.

James Bond kicks ass and plays cards.

The first part (James Bond Kicks Ass) is all kinds of amazing. The second part (James Bond Plays Cards) slows down a lot, but is still good. The third part (James Bond Doesn't Know the Movie Isn't Over Yet) is pretty bad. Even the action scene at the end is a sloppy mess.

Tommy Lee Jones, a retired military investigator, may have been hauling gravel for the twenty years since he took his pension, but single-handed he can still find more useful evidence in five minutes than a squad of active professionals working overtime. He is also the stereotype of the loyal ex-soldier who still lives in the military after years on civvy street. He's so bottled up that he can scarcely speak.

Charlize Theron is the courageous detective who tries to ignore the sexist boors she works with because she's the only one in the office who is willing to Seek The Truth.

Susan Sarandon does an unnecessary turn as a grieving military mother, unnecessary because the plot could proceed perfectly well without her. Stoking up the emotional fires seems to be her character's principal raison d'etre.

It's never clear what exactly brought about Mike Deerfield's gruesome murder. Because the final explanation we're offered may still be the Army's lie, we don't find out who's responsible. Like a wasp in a jar, George W. Bush drones on in the background, making press statement after press statement proclaiming steady progress in Fallujah. Subtle? Ahh, nope.

Nor is there any subtlety in the mawkish final scene, so weighted with heavy symbolism (carefully explained long beforehand, as to children) that Jones needs several layers of duct tape to keep it in place.

This is the Sandra Bullock, Don Chedle, Matt Dillon title. Not to be confused with the Holly Hunter and James Spada movie of the same title. This one was thoughtful and well done. The Cronenberg 'Crash' didn't do it for me at all.

The Sea Inside -- 'Mar adentro' is much more worthy, realistic, and honest. Million Dollar Baby ends tritely.

Hank Deerfield er Vietnamveteran, og har tidligere mistet en sønn som var i forsvaret. Nå er hans andre og siste sønn forsvunnet etter hjemkomsten fra Irak-krigen. Lite fornøyd med de svarene han får, reiser han til fortet sønnen hans tilhørte i New Mexico.

Nokså raskt etter ankomst får Hank vite at sønnen er funnet drept. Liket er partert og forsøkt brent opp. Det viser seg at forsvaret forsøker å dysse ned saken og ikke ønsker å etterforske den. De byråkratiske murene som møter Hank virker uoverstigelige, inntil han får uventet hjelp av etterforskeren Emily Sanders.

Under etterforskningen kommer det frem opplysninger som tegner et lite flatterende bilde av soldatene som nylig er hjemkommet fra Irak. Dette gjelder også Hanks sønn. Det er dette bildet forsvaret er lite villig til å la utenforstående få innblikk i. Finnes det i det hele tatt tapre og edle soldater blant dem som kjemper for fedrelandet? Eller er det bare en gjeng med umodne "kjekkaser" som bryter grenser og bokstavelig talt går over lik når sjansen byr seg? Og hvilke menn/gutter er det som vender hjem etter alt det grusomme de ikke bare har sett, men også selv har deltatt i?

Jeg har sett mange amerikanskproduserte krigsfilmer i årenes løp, men denne filmen er noe av det mest balanserte jeg har sett på svært lenge. Her gjøres det nemlig ikke noe forsøk på å tegne et svart-hvitt-bilde av heltene og skurkene. Jeg vil anta at filmen anses som svært kontroversiell i USA, samtidig som den ikke viser noe nytt i forhold til avsløringene som er kommet frem i ettertid.½

En flott film om forholdet mellom boksetreneren (Clint Eastwood) som motstrebende går med på å trene en ung kvinne (Hilary Swank) opp til å bli proff-bokser.

Anti war film hardly says it, but nothing much more to say. The film is about what the war has done to the country. I hope someone in Iraq is making a film about their point of view too.
