Dagoberto Gilb is an author and professor at Southwest Texas State University. He was schooled at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he received his M. A. He contributes to Fresh Air, a National Public Radio program. Gilb was the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as a afficher plus National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship. He was awarded the 1994 Ernest Hemingway Foundation Award for the short story collection, The Magic Blood. I'm simply left in awe with his prose, the way he thinks - the construction of his words. Dagoberto Gilb is the working man's writer, being a working man himself. His words become thoughts, become sentences, become paragraphs, eventually leading to the skyscraper of human nature reaching towards the heavens, connecting us with gods of old.

I read a few of these stories back in 2005 and then got to meet him a year later. From the few that I read, this book is really great. I'll give a better review when I read the rest of it.

Gilb's essays are earnest and baggy (he would probably say conversational); he seems to write until he's said what he wanted to say, and then ends abruptly, without much thought to a coherent narrative or structure.

Most of the pieces are okay, interesting and entertaining, and a couple are seriously cringey (a defense of cockfighting and, not unrelated, an account of his macho-ness). The book is redeemed by two pieces: the fascinating "Vaya Con Dios, Rosendo Juarez," about being asked to write a spec script for a seriously flawed Latino-themed cop show, and the brief but searing "The Donkey Show," which is as good an essay on racist attitudes towards Mexicans as I've ever read.… (plus d'informations)
