With a Commentary by J. B. Kist [New York: McGraw Hill, 1971]. Folio, cloth, in a dust wrapper. 117 pages, printed one-side only, reproducing in facsimile the original 117 engraved plates of the first edition published at The Hague in 1607. Accompanied by a separately bound (printed wrappers, 48 pages, illustrated) "Commentary" volume tucked into pocket at rear of volume. Dust wrapper a little scuffed, but still a fine copy of the First American Edition. One of the earliest and most famous manuals of arms ever published, embodying military reforms that were quickly adopted by other European nations. Working under the guidance of the German Prince Johann II of Nassau who had developed many new and important concepts for the organization and training of troops, De Gheyn's 117 large copper engravings constitute, in essence, step-by-step instructions for training the foot soldier in the use of his weaponry, principally musket, caliver, and pike.… (plus d'informations)
