Safe Passage: Words to Help the Grieving Hold Fast and Let Go, by Molly Fumia. The author wrote this book as she belatedly mourned the loss of her son to help hold onto the memory of him while passing through anger, confusion, guilt and loneliness. Recommended for later on in the grieving process (Conari Press,1993).

Hmm, what to say about a book I stopped reading at page 122. The subject matter -- how a family copes with the loss of all three of its children, one to murder, two to AIDS -- is certainly interesting, and, having lost a number of friends to that disease myself, I would have liked to finish the book. But I didn't like these people, especially the youngest son, who becomes the chief focus.

I had sympathy for the parents -- no family should have to bury all of its children. But I felt we learned too little about the two older boys, Greg and Glen, in the rush to focus on Guy, who comes across as a self-centered shallow party boy. Both Greg and Glen are deceased by page 121. When Guy refuses to leave his party and come to the hospital to be with his family as Glen is dying, I put the book down.

The first couple of chapters indicate that later on, as Guy's own condition deteriorates, he becomes an AIDS activist and speaks to schools and other groups of young people about prevention. Sorry, such redemption comes too late for me to care.
