This is a great book if you're wondering what's happening in Dutch, European and global politics. It displays neatly how current affairs might seem strange to the lay man, but there exits understandable reason for them remaining in this way for the coming time. The essays themselves provide a good viewpoint through history, The Hague, big capitalists and Brussels. You can read the essays separately, because they were separate talks and columns originally. However, by writing this book Thomas binds the essays neatly together in a pattern where one continues where the other left. This book has only one drawback and it's a big one. This is not an easy book. Thomas his German roots reflect themselves in his writing. Long sentences with big words and the sentence go all over the place. This provides the proper context to his story and adds flavor to all the dry material. This way of writing does require some background knowledge in geography and history to understand where Thomas is going sometimes from the reader.
All in all a great read but sometimes a struggle to get through.
