A straightforward naval war story, with two implausibly well-qualified teenage midshipmen running small boats around the eastern Mediterranean in 1940-41, dodging Italian ("Eyeteye") destroyers, shooting down enemy aircraft, and finishing up with a dramatic battle during the evacuation of Crete. Lots of dumped information about the Allied campaign in that arena, and also about small sailing ships, with a dense scattering of kedge-anchors and foretopmast-staysails.

(The period slang and gung-ho attitude reminded me rather of the pulp science fiction of E.E. Doc Smith, which dates from around the same time.)
