This largely pictorial book presents the best players, characters and the great matches of VFL football history. It covers the period from 1897 until the 1970s. The book is divided into decades with the first chapter covering the period from 1897 until 1929. Each chapter has a brief introduction which provides an overview of the significant events of that period. This encompasses football history and some general and social history. which provides some context to each chapter.

This book covers more than 100 years of Australian Rules football history. It covers covers current AFL club records, and AFL/VFL clubs which no longer exist. Interstate matches and country competitions are also covered.
