Finally Teresa was experiencing...one of those unlikely moments that saved her life from absurdity.

This is a hard novel to pay attention to, to the level it demands to be paid attention to, and yet it rewards your attention absolutely. On a sentence level it's beautiful. On a story level it's fragmentary, snatching you away again and again from a story line you want to stay in and leaping away into another scene, other characters. Thematically it tackles a fundamental question in life: how a person faces death, and makes sense of his/her own mortality. It's a brave book because Comensal never allows the least bit of romanticization, or faith in the world to come, or any other thing to distract the reader from the fragmentary, absurd way we humans go about dying. A lawyer in Mexico City is diagnosed with an aggressive form of tongue cancer. A man that made his legacy by speaking, the diagnosis was a complete change for him. It is satirical and comedic, a good look at how cancer affects the family, medical professionals, co-workers and is somewhat provoking as well as thought-provoking.
The "faggot" references and "faggot with AIDS" I hope were made to metaphorically, (a man no longer able to swing his bigotry).

Der mexikanische Anwalt Ramón erhält überraschend die Diagnose Zungenkrebs und muss sich einer schweren Operation unterziehen. Er verliert nicht nur seinen Geschmackssinn, er kann auch nicht mehr sprechen und wird keine Plädoyers mehr halten. Carmela, seine Frau, übernimmt einige Fälle aber dennoch ist die Krankheit für die begüterte Familie ein wirtschaftliches Desaster, denn Ramón ist nicht krankenversichert. Er muss ausgerechnet seinen jüngeren Bruder Emilio, diesen kaltschnäuzigen Krösus, um Geld bitten. Dr. Aldama, der Onkologe, hofft angesichts des ungewöhnlichen Tumors auf positive Auswirkungen seiner Reputation. Die treue Haushälterin schenkt Ramón derweil einen Papagei, der überwiegend Schimpfwörter in petto hat und Ramón findet ausgerechnet an diesem gerupften Vogel Gefallen. Sein Zustand wird kritisch, er bittet die Psychologin Teresa um ihre geheime Wundermedizin, denn die Schmerzen sind unerträglich. In seinem Debüt erzählt der mexikanische Autor mit schwarzem Humor und einigen Ausflügen in die Evolution mutierender Zellen, vom Leid einer Krebsdiagnose.
