In Orca Chief, Roy Henry Vickers writes and illustrates an old family story with a message for our times, about respect and appreciation for the inhabitants and resources of the earth and its oceans, about the consequences of acting carelessly and taking the earth's gifts for granted. Also, the power of apology, repentance (not only regret but change of heart and behaviour), mercy, and forgiveness.

Tsimshian version of Raven bringing daylight. In this version, Raven is born as a child to a Haida couple and grows at an usual rate. They discover that he is destined to change the world. He transforms into Raven and is destined to takes on the Sky Chief. During his journey, he creates the archipelagos of the West Coast, plants seeds to create the forests and plants, and drops salmon eggs in the rivers to create the salmon. He transforms into a pine needle and after being ingested in a sip of water, is born to the Sky chief’s daughter. Ultimately he outsmarts the Sky Chief and takes the ball of daylight. Success!
