i read this book a few years ago and it was probably written in the '80's or 90's. it is a young adult novel about this girl who is a senior in high school and lives in new england with her mother. her mom gets a job in one of those colonial time period towns in french canada and they go there for the summer. the main character is playing this girl named elizabeth (i think) and she ends up getting switched in time with the actual elizabeth by accident--its really foggy and all of a sudden she is in colonial french canada. she gets taken in by the family as elizabeth (apparently they look alike) and they only speak french and she ends up leaving on a boat with this guy named mateo and she never gets back to her own time. i really liked it and cannot remember the name of the book or the author, please put out any ideas if you have some!

Real longshot, since I can't find a description of it, but could it be Tangled in Time?

Description from publisher for Tangled in Time:
The novel opens in Edmonton with Janna's world being turned upside down when her mother tells her that she plans to remarry. Withdrawing from her family and feeling as though her father's memory has been betrayed, Janna finds herself attracted to a mysterious painting in her grandmother's house. When a beckoning woman in the painting lures Janna into the past, she is convinced that she must be dreaming. However, once she is transported into the past a second time, her predicament becomes frighteningly real when she becomes trapped as a member of a Dutch immigrant family in Neerlandia (north of Edmonton), who had followed the promise of a new land only to find themselves battling poverty.

Janna must adjust to her new situation — being dirt poor and working as a maid, yet with knowledge of what is to come. Complicating the matter, she becomes increasingly attached to her new-found family and finds herself falling in love with a boy whose family owns her grandmother's painting. Janna knows that the only link between the past and the present is the mysterious painting, but where is it?

could it be one of Margaret Buffie's books?

Hmm, doesn't sound too similar. Tagmash of time travel and Canada didn't turn anything up either.

maybe Your Time My Time by Ann Walsh? book description:
Moving with her mother from Vancouver to Wells, British Columbia, Elizabeth Connell longs for the excitement of the city and her father, brother, and friends left behind. While she is in the peaceful graveyard of nearby Barkerville she finds a small gold ring that has very special powers. By twisting the ring on her finger, Elizabeth is transported to the nineteenth century during the heyday of the gold rush. Caught between her present life with family and friends and a love in the past, Elizabeth learns more than history.

I haven't read this book, but yesterday I saw Another Shore by Nancy Bond in someone's library, and it sounds just like the book you described.

The Other Elizabeth is another Canadian time travel book, but it is about the War of 1812, and I'm pretty sure this Elizabeth is younger than the one described above. Elizabeth must be a popular time travel name.

I agree with #7, I think it's Another Shore. The "really foggy" thing definitely points to Louisbourg.

Another Canadian time travel book is The Root Cellar by Janet Lunn, but I don't think it matches the other details given.
