Missing title/author/cover in record on Recommendations page

1eromsted

On my main recommendations page I see the following:

This should be the work: https://www.librarything.com/work/27250462

The link from the blank cover image goes to that page. The link from the text "NO AUTHORNAME" goes to: https://www.librarything.com/author/.

The description text is correct.

This work first started appearing in my recommendations with the missing data a few days ago. It had previously appeared in the list correctly. After the error appeared, I decided to add this work to my catalog wishlist. It should have been removed from the recommendations page once it appeared in my catalog. That did not happen.

Thanks for the report!

NB for developers: work is Antagonía by Luis Goytisolo ...something with diacritics maybe? I'm not seeing any in my own Recs (yet), so need to do more digging. ETA: nope, logged in as another member and diacritics are showing fine. Hmm.

>1 eromsted: Which recommendations page did you see that work on? I'm having trouble finding it in your new Recs page/s.

I am also seeing this on my recs page
Recreate:
-Go to my recommendations (combined recs)
-change to all-time
-the first one is blank
*what's weird is it's actually an Elephant & Piggie book that I have

knerd.knitter mentioned maybe a work combination issue, and I think she may be right.

For her blank rec, if I hover over the actual recommendation I’m seeing https://www.librarything.com/work/29112148, but when I actually click to view the rec I’m brought to https://www.librarything.com/work/15724979.

To reproduce:
1. In knerd.knitter's account, go to /recommendations (New System recs)
2. Click to view "All-Time"
3. The first rec should be a blank/default cover with "NOAUTHORNAME"
4. Hover over the rec/cover, see this work page as the URL: https://www.librarything.com/work/29112148
5. Click to view the rec, get redirected to another work page: https://www.librarything.com/work/15724979

I have some cover glitches myself that might be related (I don't know).

https://www.librarything.com/recommendations/waltzmn

Eight lines down, there is a non-cover for WoF #15: Flames of Hope, but it appears that one doesn't have any covers to show, so that's not a bug. (Well, other than the fact that it's a truly strange recommendation for me, but about half of my recommendations fit that description and very few are actually appealing.)

But near the bottom of the first page is a recommendation for Wholehearted Faith. (Another strange one, but anyway....) This one shows up as blank white box -- and this book has covers, and it's not one of them. So that is at least a peculiar cover.

>9 waltzmn: When you go to the work page for that item, it also shows no cover, so that seems to be the most popular? Recalculating cover seemed to work

The Flames of Hope work was a group of stray editions that wanted combining, which I've now done. That has had the effect of making it show as NO AUTHORNAME on both of your recommendation pages, pointing to where the work used to be: https://www.librarything.com/work/28038617
After the combination, the editions are now part of: https://www.librarything.com/work/28107625

>10 knerd.knitter: >11 Nevov:

Note that I wasn't complaining, just observing. I didn't try to fiddle with the works, because they were lousy recommendations for me. :-)

But the result of whatever you did is interesting. It fixed Wholehearted Faith, which now has the correct cover. And it did... something... to WoF #15: Flames of Hope. Hovering over the latter shows a cover. However, the image that shows on the recommendations page itself is exactly what eromsted showed in the first post: The same generic cover, and the author shown as NO AUTHORNAME. Hovering over it shows a real cover, the book name, etc., but the page itself is uninformative.

Of course, that might just be because you did something and it needs to recalculate. I will check tomorrow.

Again, the page is

https://www.librarything.com/recommendations/waltzmn

The blank cover is currently in the eighth row, second cover in the row, to the right of Good-bye Stacey, Good-bye (yet another inexplicable recommendation :-).

I have a recommendation for https://www.librarything.com/work/27151791/summary but no cover is shown.
Clicking Cover Images the shows that there is one cover from Amazon, but its not visible.

I got a message last night that, "Your new recommendations are ready!" and when I checked after that the offending title was gone from my list.

Responding to my own post: Of course, that might just be because you did something and it needs to recalculate. I will check tomorrow.

As I rather suspected, when I came back a day later, the book that yesterday had a generic cover now shows what seems to be a correct cover, and no longer appears as anonymous.

So it appears that the blank covers do in fact arise from combination issues, and the fix is:
1. Correct the combination issue, and
2. Wait a day.

Is that enough to close the bug? I'm not sure -- it is still a bug, in a sense. But I think we can declare it a very low-priority bug!

The problem above—or at least the main one—has been fixed. It was a combining issue.

Another issue is that it's showing unpublished, future books, which often don't have covers. In the near future we're going to have a special other page for such books.
