Russian children out in the fields gathering grain find themselves in the path of the invading German army making its way to Stalingrad, a target city of their onslaught. The four youths, Kolya, Grisha, Pavel, and the girl, Nadya, realize the German army, is attacking so they set fire to the grain field’s harvest. Returning to their village the children find Tommy, a hurt English consulate’s son fleeing the city with his parents who perished in the attempt. They stretcher him to their village for recovery. Still alive in the rubble of the village is a young child Yuri whom the group takes in also. Kolya, the oldest assumes leadership and skirmishes to find food for the group, living in a village cellar. He discovers a German tank encampment and sabotages a tank. A trio of tales based on the stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne ("Dr Heidegger's Experiment", "Rappaccini's Daughter" and "The House of the Seven Gables") each one featuring the peerless Vincent Price. The film is a touch slow and stagy, but director Sidney Salkow's work is still captivating, with his film imbued with plenty of style and an arch Gothic sensibility. There is a strong moral subtext to each of the tales with the script full of great lines for the actors to grapple with. Vincent Price is his usual mesmerising self, gliding 'round the screen with a riveting presence and delivering his lines with flawless mellifluence.… (plus d'informations)

Dashing sea captain Truscott (Rock Hudson) washes up at the notorious Scarlet Angel saloon and falls in with good-time girl Roxy McClanahan (Yvonne De Carlo). Roxy makes off with Truscott's bankroll and soon afterwards, due to luck and circumstance, falls into high society in the guise of war widow Linda Caldwell. Things are looking grand for Roxy - that is until Truscott re-appears! "Scarlet Angel" has a well-used plotline that is cleverly refreshed by Oscar Brodney's snappy dialogue, which is delivered with wit and a knowing smile by Yvonne De Carlo and Rock Hudson. Both play stock characters but do it with such sass, style and aplomb as to easily hop over the more clichéd elements of the characters and the story. Director Sidney Salkow keeps things moving and doesn't dwell too long on any particular element, thereby minimising the sillier elements. The film looks beautiful - Russell Metty's soft, sensuous Technicolor photography looks absolutely gorgeous, presenting a romantic look that you can absolutely wallow in. Overall "Scarlet Angel" is fun, adventurous and romantic; it is beautifully played by the leads and is technically ravishing to look at - a great fun, largely undemanding little film,… (plus d'informations)
