This book provides a fun and easy way to learn about rocks, fossils, and how they are formed and erode.

I like that it gives little definitions at the bottom. It goes over the 3 types of rocks and how they are made, as well as topics on lava and magma and different types of crystals. The pictures they use are photographs and properly show the type of fossil or rock being discussed. It's very informal despite the short sentences, and I find that it is perfect for a lesson on geology. It even has little projects at the back where a student could make their own fossils or start a rock collection.

Interesting in its own right, and useful as a /Dwarf Fortress/ strategy guide.

I am always very fascinated by rocks and fossils so this book was very fun to read. I would have it in my classroom as a great resource book or definitely put it in my personal class library in case a student of mine wanted to know more about rocks.

Rocks, from the series Rock Stars, outlines the basics about types of rocks as well as how to find and identify rocks. Authors Chris and Helen Pellant, whose photographs on rocks and fossils are used worldwide by publishers, create a high interest nonfiction book by creating visually appealing page layouts. The photos are the main focus with limited and simple sentences that support the discovery and identification of rocks. In greater detail, the authors' positioning of text, background color and shapes enhance the readability- making it a great identification book for younger readers. Other helpful features include bolded terms that are explained in the glossary, an index, a contents and photo captions when necessary. Younger readers will find the Record Breakers and Did You Know sections interesting as they list out random, but intriguing facts about rocks. The crisp and detailed photos will help readers classify rocks. Also, the brief sections on how to start collecting and finding rocks will get readers antsy to go rock hunting. The cautionary alert to go rock collecting with adults lets readers know that look for rocks can be dangerous. This book is worth having in a collection that serves elementary readers as it creates a feeling for reader involvement and the information provided is developmentally appropriate for young readers who are discovering rocks for the first time.

Age Appropriate: 7 to 11 years-old
Note: This book could be used for older readers who have limited English.

This book had was very educational, but seemed to have a good bit of superfluous information. We will probably revisit it in a few years. I'm guessing it is probably best for children in the 8-12 year old range.

Well, I wanted a resource for gemstones and I got a you-dummy, learn the basics book. As I delve into the mire of gemstones, it is apparent that there are several limbs from which all stones grow and I need to memorize the various names of those limbs and their, what?, limblets? sticks? You get the idea. Good book for background info.

My but this really is complete. It has information that you'd never imagine you wanted to know about thousands of rocks and minerals and of course general information.
