I liked this book for two reasons. I really enjoyed this book because it was very reader friendly and it was very appropriate for pre-k age students. Readers could relate to this little boy while joining him on his journey to the zoo to find a perfect pet. Although he didn’t find his pet right away, the author kept the story interesting. For example, she used rhyme and naming opposites throughout the book to keep the fluency. One example of this is “too high, too low, too fast, too slow.”
Another reason I enjoyed this book was because if its illustrations. They were extremely vibrant and very colorful. Although the pages were filled with color, the drawings were very simple and the pictures were easy to depict. Each emotion aligned with the description in the text and I think that is a great thing to think about when making young children’s books.
The main idea of this story focused on the fact that the little boy went to the zoo to find the “perfect” pet. However, by the end of the story, he realized the greatest pet was a dog – who has been there in front of him the whole time.

Little Kid Reaction: All kids love animals, and the author really knows how to grab their attention in this book. I enjoyed the rhyming of words and the flow of the story. The photos are interesting with bright colors and good illustrations of the animals at the zoo. The book gives great description of various shapes, direction of too tall, too short, and too slow.

I Want a Pet is an excellent easy reader, as well as a book for reading aloud with kids. The ending is the greatest part when the boy is lying in bed with the puppy by his side preparing to sleep for the night.

Big Kid Reaction: This is adorable AND educational. The story flows well. As a parent I like how it shows kids that you need to look at the positive and the negative for your decisions ... even when its something you really, really want.

Kids love pets and I don't know of any child who wouldn't want to have a pet of their very own. One little boy plays with his sock monkey, stuffed bear, tiger and elephant. He already has a puppy but still believes he wants a pet, but not just any pet. The little boy sets out on a journey to find a new pet at the zoo. He visits the giraffe and feels it is too high. He spots a turtle, and feels he is too slow. When he comes across an alligator he feels that it's just too scary. After a long day at the zoo he discovers that his puppy is just right.

Cathy Morrison has created a story kids will enjoy before naptime or bedtime. Easy reader words and sentences jump off he pages and make learning to read fun and easy. Lightly colored illustrations display recognizable characters and actions that any child could comprehend. Young readers will learn, animals, high, low, fast, slow and more.
