5801. The Faustball Tunnel German POWs in America and Their Great Escape, by John Hammond Moore (read 13 Sep 2022) This is a 1978 book which tells in fascinating detail of German POWs in Arizona who in 1944 dug a 178-foot tunnel from the camp where they were confined to the outside of the camp, and through which 25 German POWs crawled and escaped. The POWs who figured out how to do this were exceptionally astute and the book tells their story well. All 25 were eventually recaptured or turned themselves in when they could they could not get Mexico. The author managed to find some of the escapers many years later and interviewed them and most told of their experience willingly. When back in camp they suffered little punishment since under the Geneva Convention rules they committed no crime. tho one wonders whether the Nazis would have treated escaping American POWs as the Geneva Convention requires. The author did a great job in fully detailing this strange happening.

More than a receipt book, this is a small-niche history book. Fascinating, but difficult for the modern cook to follow as it often says things like "a small spoonful" when it's talking about critical ingredients. Critical, as in, too much might make your oven explode or something.

Worth the cover price just for the instructions on packing a corpse for travel.
