I really enjoyed this book.

Raney's location in the witness protection program is compromised. The Chief of Police wants her close by to testify at the trial, and with the death of Chase's stepfather, they have the perfect cover. A fake wedding and an inherited house.

I like that Chase, while struggling with the job versus his response to Raney, doesn't do the angsty "I made a mistake, I can't do that again" dance. Once he's made his decision, he stands by it. The suspense kept me reading and the straightforward way in which the characters interacted rang true with their characterization. Just the right amount of steam to go along with this type of story, and enough hints at the stories to come in the series to make me want to move on to the next book.… (plus d'informations)

I had high hopes for this book, as the description on the back seemed very fast-paced and suspenseful. I was incredibly disappointed. Although there was a time limit on finding the next victim to prevent their murder, there didn't seem to be a true sense of urgency while reading this. There was no suspense at all until the last 20 pages. There were a lot of things happening, and puzzle pieces were being dropped until the very end when everything came together, but it just didn't seem like anything was really going on. There was no page-turning action or real urgency. I wasn't in a rush to get back to it when I had to put the book down. We saw the personal lives of the detectives, as well as their working relationship, so they were well-developed and you have a good sense of who they are. The next victim (once found) was a strong female who was also pretty well developed even though she wasn't brought into the storyline at the very beginning. You do feel for her and understand what she's going through.

All in all, I would say to skip this if you're on the fence about it. I've never read anything by Beverly Long before, but if you are a fan of her other books, then you may enjoy this one. I own the next book in this series, but I am going to skip reading it. It sounds like a good story with a lot of suspense and action, but this one did too, so I'm choosing to not move on to the next book. If you like cop stories, putting puzzle pieces together, and strong female characters, then you may like this. If you're looking for a gripping read, though, this is not it.

Terrific conclusion to the series. Layla has been waiting and preparing for this day. Almost two years earlier, she had provided the testimony that sent Douglas Glass to prison for fraud. He made it clear to her that he would kill her when he got out of prison, but nobody believed her. So she prepared to run with a new identity and everything else she'd need. When she received word that he'd been released early, she knew it was time to go. She didn't expect to be involved in a car accident.

When Jamie got the call about the accident on a rainy night, as the doctor on call, he took the mobile unit to the site of the crash. Something about the beautiful woman gets under his skin, and he feels an instant connection with her. Though he gives all of his patients his best attention, this one compels him to do more.

I enjoyed watching the relationship between Jamie and Layla develop. The connection and sparks between them are immediate, but Layla knows better than to give in to them. She has to disappear. I loved seeing Jamie find it impossible to stay away from Layla. His late-night Thanksgiving feast with her in the hospital was sweet as he tried to get to know her. When Layla disappeared from the hospital, Jamie was determined to find her for medical and personal reasons. His friend and police chief, Marcus, joins him in unraveling the mystery surrounding her. What he learns makes him more determined.

I understood Layla's fear and reluctance to trust anyone (especially Marcus). Her escape is complicated by issues caused by her injuries. I loved her persistence and ingenuity in finding a hideout where she could heal. She didn't count on Jamie's tenacity and was stunned when he found her but also grateful for his medical expertise. I loved seeing them grow closer as they got to know each other. Jamie falls hard for her and Layla for him, but her fears make her ready to run as soon as possible. I ached for Jamie when she pushed him away and loved how he refused to give up. The epilogue was a great wrap-up for the book and series.

The suspense was excellent. There are several sections told from Glass's point of view, showing his ruthless determination to carry out his promise. Meanwhile, we follow along with Layla's attempt to disappear while simultaneously seeing Glass's progress tracking her down. The suspense kept me glued to the pages as Glass closed in on Layla. The final confrontation was a nail-biter with a twist I didn't see coming.

Reading this book was like eating my favorite comfort food. It is my go-to genre; dead people and mysteries, cops and coffee, plenty of legwork and problem solving. Just the right amount of drama among characters, a little too much romance for my taste (but any amount is too much for me), it was perfectly entertaining. The mystery draws you through the story effortlessly, keeps you guessing, and delivers in the end. I would definitely continue on with this series and look forward to reading the next installment.… (plus d'informations)
