2,5 ( ) "But who was I before?" Will had asked. "Since when does the butterfly ask about the caterpillar?" she'd answered. "He forgets. And revels in what he is." -357 My first exposure to Funke's books was the Inkworld trilogy, which I loved. I was excited to dive into one of her other series, and I was not disappointed. This one had all the creative world building and magic I was expecting and the perfect amount of adventure. Also, to make it even better, the main characters are all inspired (very, very loosely, but still) by the Grimm brothers (their names are Jacob and Will? I mean, come on!). I will definitely be reading the rest of the series. Scary, engrossing, angsty, action-packed fractured fairy tale adventure! I couldn't put it down. It reminded me a little of [b:The Book of Lost Things|69136|The Book of Lost Things|John Connolly|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1170703577s/69136.jpg|1164024] because it took place in a dark world from which all fairy tales are born. I haven't read the Funke's mega-popular Inkspell series, so I don't know how they compare, but frankly, I think this book is too spooky (the Tailor in particular was the freaky stuff of nightmares) and hormone-driven for young kids. But if they're old enough to enjoy a good scare or have a serious crush, they're probably old enough for this. There is quite a bit of romance going on in the story. The main characters are all in their 20s or older and there are multiple hook-ups (most just briefly alluded to).
