This visually powerful and stunning board book features unusual arctic animals in the winter snow. Readers count backwards from ten caribou down to nothing as the light snowfall becomes a blizzard.

Newhouse uses a very limited color palette to illustrate the arctic landscape, and the text is large. This sturdy book is perfect for classroom or library story times for tots in preschool. This counting book in board format uses Arctic animals to count down from ten to one. As the countdown progresses, snow begins to fall, increasing to a blizzard, which unfortunately makes the animals from seven down to one more difficult to see. Canadian folk artist Maxwell Newhouse used oil on linen to create his illustrations.

A very wintery setting captures the artic and northern setting yet the photos did not always enhance the prose on each page. Some of the pictures were grainy and the animals were difficult to see clearly. Otherwise a simple straight forward book that a young child would enjoy.

This board book would be great reading one on one with a child. The snow creeping in little by little is almost imperceptible at first, but kids will get a kick out of seeing a blizzard move in. Counting on Snow has some great vocabulary and animals that are not common knowledge. ( )

This book counts groups of animals from 10 to 1. The illustrations go from clear to a snow storm. Overall a goo counting book and discussion of Arctic weather. Also great example of painting. ( )
