DS9 is one of my favourite series ever so it's very hard to review series 1 when I love the whole thing so much. Series 1 is very much in the tradition of Star Trek - standalone stories with no ongoing thread. Towards the end you get the first hints of future developments but only with the benefit of hindsight. My other favourite series Babylon 5 was also running and it gave DS9 the kick it needed to do something different and create a running story line from series 2. DS9 also has fabulous main characters who are complex and allowed to develop. But its main strength are its irregular characters - the fab Dukat, Garak, Weyoun, and Martok. ( ) Democratic imperialists and former terrorists work together on a space station in order to keep away fascist imperialists. At its best, it's just barely an okay show. Usually, it's crap. The stories are the biggest offender - poorly conceived, uninteresting, and filled with plot holes and continuity problems. The show has a pretty good reputation, though, so I'd like to hope that that area will be fixed in later seasons. But short of a complete retooling, it could never be as good as TNG, simply because none of these characters get along. DS9's whole concept is that it's about unpleasant people, forced to work together on a job they don't want to do, in a place they don't want to be. What's fun about watching that?
