Slow Dog by Joy Johnston is a delightful children's story about an older dog that moves slowly and a young girl who wants to go fast a lot of the time. I think this could fit a lot of families. I loved the bright, beautiful illustrations. I almost feel like I could reach in and pet Murphy. I like that the illustrations are inclusive with people of color but I think the story could resonate with many. I see lots of children with energy who want to go fast--and I remember wanting to go fast. Yet, Murphy and this book show the true value in taking life slower and enjoying the little things. Slow Dog is one of my favorite children's book reads of this year.Slow Dog is a paperback book that is 28 pages long and measures about 8 1/2 inches square and fairly thin. It is aimed at children about ages four to eight. I received a copy of this book through LibraryThings Early Reader Program. All opinions within this review are my own. He takes his time and goes at his own pace. In spending time with him, Destiny learns to notice the small things in life. The author says the story was inspired by a real-life rescue dog. I would have liked to hear more about that in the story to explain why Murphy was slow. Slow Dog is a simple story of acceptance with colorful and expressive drawings.I received an advanced reader copy from LibraryThing's Early Reader program in exchange for an honest review. Destiny’s grandmother has a dog, Murphy, who is the slowest dog in the world. At least, Destiny thinks so. She has lots of energy so does things like running or playing really fast.
Destiny thinks Murphy is as slow as a turtle. Little ones who do things quickly will identify with Destiny. Because Murphy doesn’t go fast, he sees things such as a squirrel climbing a tree, or a caterpillar on a rock.
Little ones who do things quickly will identify with Destiny. This book, will show children the value of slowing down, and some of the things they will see by going slower. A good idea for youngsters living in this fast-paced world. The tale also teaches that the differences in others can be good, too. This story is based on a real-life rescue dog. Children aged three through seven will enjoy this five-star book!
