Comic and Graphic Books. Fantasy. Young Adult Fiction. LGBTQIA+ (Fiction.) HTML:A scientist attempts to bring her younger sister back to life with unexpected results in this Frankenstein-inspired graphic novel about ghosts, identity, and family
When Doctor Frances Aiâ??s younger sister Maura died in a tragic accident six months ago, Frances swore she would bring her back to life. However, the creature that rises from the slab is clearly not Maura. This girl, who chooses the name â??M,â? doesnâ??t remember anything about Maura's life and just wants to be her own person. However, Frances expects M to pursue the same path that Maura had been onâ??applying to college to become a scientistâ??and continue the plans she and Maura shared. Hoping to trigger Mauraâ??s memories, Frances surrounds M with the trappings of Mauraâ??s past, but M wants nothing to do with Francesâ?? attempts to change her into something sheâ??s not.
In order to face the future, both Frances and M need to learn to listen and let go of Maura once and for all. Talia Duttonâ??s debut graphic novel, M Is for Monster, takes a hard look at what it means to live up to other peopleâ??s expectationsâ??as well as our own.

Do you love the original Frankenstein? Do you weep uncontrollably over the sentiment behind songs like "I don't know my name" by Grace VanderWaal?

This story is LOADED with meaning. Whether you read it as a story about narcisstic parenting, or queerness, or transness, or something else entirely, it will hit you hard. ( )

Probably the best graphic novel I read in 2022. As an older sister this hit me everywhere all at once. I should probably read Frankenstein now. ( )

A different take on the Frankenstein story. It didn’t really grab me. Lesson to be learned, you need to let go in order to move forward and that sometimes, someone you meet isn’t a replacement but something new. The color choice was different, black and a muted green/gray. ( )

A great book that I read in one sitting! We find two sisters bound by an immense love for each other but also for science. Unfortunately, during a bad experience, one of them, Maura dies. Francis does not accept this loss and decides to resuscitate his sister. His attempt restores his sister's body, of course, but not the latter. M finds himself in a body with no memory of his past life.

It's an interesting read on the strong ties that can unite brothers and sisters but also on mourning, on acceptance. M finds herself in Maura's place, a place she certainly didn't ask for but who still wants to live this life. Talia Dutton knew how to do a remarkable job with this book because I was not bored even once! I wanted to have a lot more details about M, where she came from etc. but this expectation was not fulfilled. However, the ending was very touching!

Many thanks to Abrams Books for allowing me to read this little gem. This book makes me want to read more graphic novels even more ( )
