Chargement... The Kaiju Preservation Societypar John Scalzi
![]()
![]() ![]() Just finished this book and its definitely not my favourite novel from Scalzi. The characters were fairly indistinguishable and it felt like they all shared the exact same personality/sense of humour. The snarky banter and dialogue was a bit too campy for me. I understand Scalzi prefaced the book with a warning that it was intended to be "light". The concept of the Kaiju Preservation Society was pretty unique but I was left wanting more and can only imagine how great a more serious, gritty and longer version would have been. In the case of this book, it is a good idea to read the front end of the Acknowledgements at the back of the book first. Scalzi himself said re this book" "It's a pop song...light and catchy." And it really is. The banter among the characters is Excellent. Maybe more exposition about the "alt-science" than I needed [quibble]. Note: there is some "gruesome" violence (a la Shawn of the Dead style). But since it is embedded within the banter and "it all works out in the end" vibe, it is not off-putting. And the end is Very Satisfying!

When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls "an animal rights organization." Tom's team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world. They're the universe's largest and most dangerous panda and they're in trouble. It's not just the Kaiju Preservation Society whose found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die.
