Not quite what I was expecting. The author can certainly be praised for attention to detail. ( )My main issue with this book is that the plot focuses too much on what's going on around these characters instead of actually developing their relationship. I understand that they first come together as a means to an end, as would have been common in an era when "buggery" was a serious crime, but they basically fall in love dick first and it doesn't make sense the lengths they go to to be together when there isn't much else there. Pages of William trying to figure out how to transport money or picking out a coat for his employer, or Edwin dealing with William's brother and also doing service things for his employer... it just got a bit boring. I know what a valet does, that's not what I'm here for. If you really enjoy that ins and outs of daily life and a really slow burn romance, you'll be less disappointed, but I just found it a bit to much. I got the book as a review copy from the author.“Beck and Call” by Annick Trent is the story about two valets falling in love with each other. At first, I was a little disappointed. I had expected it to be a book about hetero love. It is in fact a book about gay love. But to be honest, I am very happy this book fell into my hands. I hadn’t picked it up if I had understood beforehand that the lovers were homosexuals. Just because - as a woman - that’s not the romantic story I usually read. After reading “Beck and Call”, I wonder why. It was a well-written story and I enjoyed reading it. I liked most the insights it offered into the life of two valets, William and Edwin. How every step they take is depending on their employers. Sometimes it felt claustrophobic to read it. The historical background was interesting to me. I didn’t know that there was a time in England when political discussions of any kind was banned. My favorite character was William, who’s just an honest guy. Sometimes I didn’t understood Edwins trust issues - even given his history with Felix Ayre. The thing that I didn’t like about the book is its ending. Felix gets away with his behavior. That might be historically accurate, but it felt outright wrong. I do hope this is the first book in a series so Felix can become a proper villain and be punished in the end. Also, I’d like to know more about the women in this story. Cette critique a été rédigée pour LibraryThing Member Giveaways. M/M historical romanceA story of Edwin and William and their life. One of service to the other along with all the rules and obstacles they face. One of secrets and blackmail. Well written. I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
