It is said that everyone over a certain age can remember distinctly what they were doing when they heard that President Kennedy had been assassinated, or that Princess Diana had been killed in a Paris car crash, but I, for one, could recall all too clearly where I was standing when a policeman told me that my wife had been murdered. Bill Russell is acting as a volunteer steward at Warwick races when he confronts his worst nightmare--the violent death of his much-loved wife. But worse is to come when he is accused of killing her and hounded mercilessly by the media. His life begins to unravel completely as he loses his job and his home. Even his best friends turn against him, believing him guilty of the heinous crime in spite of the lack of compelling evidence. Bill sets out to clear his name but finds that proving one's innocence is not easy - one has to find the true culprit, and Bill believes he knows who it is. But can he prove it before he becomes another victim of the murderer. Guilty Not Guilty is a journey of greed and jealousy set against the grief of personal tragedy and loss, with many a twist and turn along the way.… (plus d'informations)

A good read, well researched, joins a list of good books written by he and his father ( )

I still think Felix Francis is a excellent writer - his prose is easy to read and whizzes past quickly. But his plots are starting to lack. I guessed the twist. I was just a bit disappointed all around. ( )

Bill Russell knows exactly where he was when he found out that the love of his life, Amelia, was dead. He is crushed, but when he is accused of her murder, he can't believe it. Amelia was found by her brother, Joe, who had an adversarial relationship with Amelia and Bill for the last few years. Joe caused issues between Bill, Amelia, and Amelia's mom, Mary.
As Bill digs deep into the events surrounding Amelia's death, he is overcome with grief, but he is determined to prove he didn't do it. When Bill is involved in a car crash, things escalate.
When things seem to be settled, there is one final twist. Now, what should Bill do? ( )

Francis, Felix. Guilty Not Guilty. Simon and Schuster, 2019,
For the last several years, Felix Francis has been publishing novels without adding his father’s name to the title. Nevertheless, while reading Guilty, Not, Guilty, I found myself checking off elements of the Dick Francis formula. Protagonist is a former jockey still connected to English racing. Check. His marriage is not all that it should be. Check. He is accused of a murder he did not commit. Check. Someone tries to kill him. Check. Business and other details are fully researched. Check. The police are professional but not quite up to the job of making justice happen. Check. So, it should work, but it doesn’t. None of the racing or business (in this case, insurance) details matter much to the plot. We have a story about the death of a man’s wife, but we never meet her. Things happen to our hero without much active response from him. There is a trial scene that goes on forever. Finally, there is no denouement to let us know how the protagonist feels after the surprise at the end. Three disappointed stars. ( )
