The vocabulary and language is wonderfully diverse making each story a rich delight. This was a fun read! ( ) Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. Firstly, I think the title of the book is beautiful and, even though it is the title for one of the 16 short stories in this book, I do believe it is quite apt for the entire collection.Even though each story is very different, they all seem to be centered on the average everyday character, which in turn makes it very real to read as it could be any person sitting next to you on the train or any person you pass on the street! The stories are thought provoking and deep in many ways. The sharp writing style is of very good quality, but I'm not sure if it would be to every readers taste. Some of the stories I found hard to get into, and some I found ended quite abruptly. However there were quite a few I particularly enjoyed such as 'Julian's Crunchy Apotheosis', 'The Devil-Ape Of Goma', and 'The Approach To The Bridge'. If you like a little quirky but meaningful reading then I would recommend this book. I give it 3 stars as I am divided between the vast array of concepts in this collection. Cette critique a été écrite dans le cadre des Critiques en avant-première de LibraryThing. I received this book in exchange for a honest review. I guess I can say that I’m not a big fan of short stories. I enjoy more character development and a story to sink your teeth into. In many if the stories in the book I wondered what’s next, that’s what drove me through the stories. I was almost waiting for twists that did not happen. I feel like these stories are good beginnings but often left me feeling flat. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
In gritty, penetrating prose, the stories in The Window is a Mirror deftly mine both working-class and privileged sensibility to extract common elements. Characters of varying social strata are subjected to merciless scrutiny as they pursue prizes of dubious value, heedless of cost. Whether or not they get what they want is the least of their problems. In the end their disparate futilities mix them into a single tribe that looks like us.
