I tried to like this book, but I just couldn't manage it. I almost put it down before I finished the prologue, but I decided to give it a chance. I made it about half way through the book before saying enough. I found the author's writing style rather obtuse and the characters non-compelling. I read the other two reviews and almost wonder if I was reading the same book. Obviously it works for others, but not me. Abbott Peter's years in the desert at St James The Less in the desert of Egypt. He's was sent to close down the run down mission but that was a number of years ago. Author takes the first half of the book literally just introducing characters. Backgrounds on them etc this is all prior to the main story starting. Once it does start it starts with a bang. The little mission is taken over by soldiers. They actually hang one of the people. Then we get developing plot lines for the other characters, a woman who wants to move up in the church, a designer who has been unhappy with the world as a whole, the leader of the soldiers who seems to have a change of heart. Can't really say that I would recommend this. The main character has a dry whit and is really rather depressing. I have read a later book in the series and did really enjoy it however. Cette critique a été rédigée pour LibraryThing Member Giveaways. I enjoyed the story, the writer's style of telling the story and the actual physical characteristics of the book. The pages are non-glare, the font is nice and not too small, the page gutters and margins are generous and the paperback cover is sort of velvety feeling. Looking forward to more stories featuring Abbot Peter! aucune critique | ajouter une critique

'What was it like in the desert, abbot?' asks Rosemary. And, in a way, this book is his answer. In the first of the acclaimed Abbot Peter mysteries, Peter takes us to St James, a fragile community in the hot sands of Middle Egypt, peopled by those with nowhere else to take their creaking lives. There in the shadows of Mt Sinai Peter faces deception, delusion and death. The monastery is already threatened with closure, due to rationalisation. But when a harsh and unpredictable maniac comes to call, people's lives are under threat. Suddenly, ordered religious practice is disordered, leaving no one unaffected. As events come to a traumatic climax, all have to question their beliefs and make decisions about their lives ... including Abbot Peter. 'It was interesting, ' replies the abbot to Rosemary. 'A slightly bloody retreat.' I think the book should be banned before it does the image of religion some serious damage. Ian Hislop, 'Private Eye', 'Have I Got News for You'. Genuinely funny, tenderly serious - a delightful small novel. Sara Maitland, author of A Book of Silence If you're after a surprising, disturbing, profound, witty magical mystery tour, then this book is for you. Simon Mayo, Radio Presenter, author.
