I found the writing to be somewhat overblown and the word choices odd in places - e.g. stymied a laugh rather than stifled a laugh. The world building was tolerable although I found the multiplicity of barely described races did nothing to add to the world. Plot-wise, it was a fairly typical quest and prophecy which took some time to get going. It’s not something I would have chosen myself; I got given it along with book 2 in the series. What a story! I was glued to the pages and I needed a scorecard to keep up with the players. I liked Prince Janto Allbrecht, heir to the Lanerim throne, from the first. Janto was to marry Princess, Serrafina Gavenstone in a few weeks after he went to a competition on a neighboring island. Janto should have been conceited and a royal pain, but he was neither and he cared for his people. Janto and Serra learned of a plot to destroy both countries unless they worked together and get over past hurts and hatred. I have read many books of this genre but found it initially very confusing to try and follow the flow of the book. I persevered and it was well work the read. It is a story about growth, challenges, expectations defied and the ability to rise above decisions made. It is a YA book but some of the language and ideas are probably more appropriate for mid-teens and not middle schoolers. Janto and Serra grew up in Lansera and Vesperi grew up Meduan. They have to overcome their differences, cleanse their lands of an evil that is killing their people and then unite the land. I found this book mediocre, there were parts I enjoyed and sections that dragged on. I have read many other fantasy books that I would recommend first, but this one will entertain if nothing else is available.
What a beautifully entailed fantastical read. Whenever the characters come together for an engaging adventure I am right on the soars of flying like this book! Ahh, an surly relaxing read. Entails: hilarious chit chat, violence, and some hop running! Appartient à la sérieWings Rising (1)

The Meduans and Lanserim have maintained an uneasy truce for two generations, but their ways of life are as compatible as oil and water. When Vesperi, a Meduan noblewoman, kills a Lanserim spy with a lick of her silver flame, she hopes the powerful display of magic will convince her father to name her as his heir. She doesn't know the act will draw the eye of the tyrannical Guj, Medua's leader, or that the spy was the brother of Serrafina Gavenstone, the fiancèe of Turyn's grandson, Prince Janto. I liked this book very much. Big parts of it are a quest. Having Tolkien and The Lord of the Rings as my favorite literature, I enjoyed that.
The characters are quite convincing, they are very different from each other, which makes for a nice reading. My favorite character was Vesperi, who is obviously having trouble to be nice to other people. There is horror in the book, and sadness, and faith. A big faith in what people can mean to each other.
The end was quite satisfying to me.
