"The author of The Cake Therapist returns with another sweet and emotional tale featuring Neely, the baker with a knack for finding exactly the right flavor for any occasion... A crisp tang of citrus that is at once poignant and familiar, sharpening the senses and opening the mind to possibilities once known and long forgotten... Claire "Neely" Davis is no ordinary pastry chef. Her flavor combinations aren't just a product of a well-honed palate: she can "taste" people's emotions, sensing the ingredients that will touch her customers' souls. Her gift has never failed her--until she meets a free-spirited bride-to-be and her overbearing society mother. The two are unable to agree on a single wedding detail, and their bickering leaves Neely's intuition frustratingly silent--right when she needs it most. Between trying to navigate a divorce, explore a new relationship, and handle the reappearance of her long-absent father, Neely is struggling to make sense of her own conflicting emotions, much less those of her hard-to-please bride. But as she embarks on a flavorful quest to craft the perfect wedding celebration, she'll uncover a family history that sheds light on both the missing ingredients and her own problems--and illustrates how the sweet and sour in life often combine to make the most delicious memories.."--… (plus d'informations)

I had never read this author before and discovered about 10 pages in that this story is the second in a series. I was prepared to struggle with following the characters, but soon found that the author wrote the book in such a way that this is a great standalone book. I was completely charmed by the narrative device of tracing Neely's especially gifted sense of smell/emotionality through stories of individuals from the past few hundred years in the same geographical area as Neely. The author was skillful in how she wove these vignettes into the current storyline, and I honestly enjoyed reading about these individuals more than I did about Neely. While you may be tempted to treat this as a fast light read, you'll want to slow down and take your time with this one. ( )

Did you read The Cake Therapist?
This book picks up after that story.
If you haven't read it, read it. In my personal opinion, it's one of the best books I read last year.

I did prefer that one, no surprise, I probably tend to favor the first book in a series.
But I reached a point with this book last night where I was literally cooking dinner and reading because I didn't want to put it away for the night without finishing it.

I would have liked more time in the bakery and less in flashbacks. I just love her magical scenes with sensing the right flavor and picking up people's memories.

Is there a going to be a third in this series? I would love to have a third. ( )

This book took me a little while to get into, the past history timeline dragged for me. But half way through it picked up and I ended up really enjoying it. I have the first of this series to read also, didn't realize one came before it, The Cake Therapist, so I still look forward to reading that too! ( )

I read this book because a blogger I follow suggested it. I was able to claim an advance copy. At first I did not understand why the author was flashing back to the "spice bush" story, but this part of the story became crystal clear as the story went on. Because of the flashbacks, the book read very slowly for me. The overall story was unique. When I found chunks of time to read, the story was very interesting. Personally I found this is not a book that you can dip into and out of for 10 minutes a day. When my time made me dip, I found I had to re-read parts of the book to make the needed connections. The author did a fine job telling a unique story. ( )

I received this book from Penguin Random House through Goodreads giveaway. This was a delightful magical story that cleverly intertwined the past and present with an interesting twist of spices and smells. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Thank you! ( )
