Independent and spirited, Miss Annis Wychwood gives little thought to finding herself a suitable husband, thus dashing the dreams of many hopeful suitors. When she becomes embroiled in the affairs of the runaway heiress Lucilla, Annis's life becomes more complicated, as she soon encounters her fugitive's uncivil and high-handed guardian, Mr. Oliver Carleton. Befriending the wayward girl brings excitement and unexpected consequences, among them greater interaction with Lucilla's guardian, who is quite the rudest man Annis has ever met.. I enjoyed all the relationships and interactions (Annis and her brother, Lucilla and Ninian, Miss Farlow and any one really) more than I enjoyed the central romance. Annis and Oliver just seemed to do noting but bicker (using extraordinary amounts of period slang) in an exhausting way, but if that's what they're looking for in a relationship... From Amazon: "The spirited and independent Miss Annis Wychwood is twenty-nine and well past the age for falling in love. But when Annis embroils herself in the affairs of a pretty runaway heiress, Miss Lucilla Carleton, she is destined to see a great deal of her fugitive's uncivil and high-handed guardian, Mr. Oliver Carleton. Befriending the wayward girl brings unexpected consequences, among them the conflicting emotions aroused by her guardian, who is quite the rudest man Annis has ever met..." I liked this one very much, Annis is written very much in the spirit of "Emma," an independent woman of wealth who does not need or especially want to marry. Her slow realization that she can't live without Oliver Carleton makes for an enchanting read. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Found the first chapter or so difficult to get into as I'm not used to her writing style.
There was a point partway through where I saw similarities with Pride and Prejudice (the two main characters initially hate each other, she turns down his initial marriage proposal and there is a crises that brings them back together). Cousin Maria is Mr Collins reincarnated.
So, found the book mildly derivitive yet mildly amusing. Wasnt gripping and I did glaze over, especially when Cousin Maria went off on one of her speeches (yes I know that was kind of the point, but.....). ( )
