A Very Different Kind of Love StoryDoctor Richard Mason, borderline alcoholic, drug addict and jaded loner, has just discovered he's adopted. If that wasn't enough to shatter his personal reality he's also 'inherited' his physically & mentally challenged sister, Hannah Rice, a girl he hasn't seen since he was in high school.Along with a 3.5 million dollar trust fund, Hannah comes with some very dark family secrets. Mason is world-renowned for healing bodies but is woefully lacking when it comes to the human heart. This book reads like an episode of House, complete with Richard Mason, a doctor with a sharp tongue, cane and addiction to pain killers (seriously straight out of the TV Show House). I loved that the author gave us glimpses of Hannah’s internal frustration as the doctors dug to unravel her diagnoses’ past. I did not expect myself to enjoy this book as much as I did. I am not typically a fan of books within a series, but this book certainly held its own as it easily could have been a standalone novel, regardless I look forward to more books in the series, some of which are out now.

Dr. Richard Mason's life is turned upside down when he learns the man he thought was his father isn't and he has a sister whom he has become guardian. Johanna has lived in a group home for nearly thirty years due to an automobile accident and now she comes to live with him.

I really enjoyed this book. Both Mason and Hanna are damaged, physically and emotionally, by their pasts and their developing relationship begins to open up both their worlds. Secrets long hidden start to come out and the result change both their lives. Hanna's story is particularly interesting and her growth most dramatic. Mason remains more closed off and angry but there is growth there too.

I want to follow their developing relationship and see them both heal. ( )

Genesis by Lisa Beth Darling is the first in the Sister Christian series. I read this some time ago and forgot to post a review so I will be light on details, but details are included in the blurb and most other reviews, so...

Thinking back, I kinda like writing this well after the fact. Rather than wonder if I should mention some minor aspect I am instead writing from my recollection of reading this. In other words, my review is almost entirely based on how I feel now and how I remember feeling then about the book. For the record, this book ages well in one's reading memory.

I remember being unsure what I was getting into, which can be fun but also difficult when you're not sure what to look for. I found myself putting the book down thinking I would pick it up that night or the next day but coming back to it within an hour or so because I wanted to know how the characters were doing. So I was pleasantly surprised by that (and subsequently very pleased with the other work I have read from Darling).

I would recommend this to readers who like unique twists to the types of situations we find in novels. Reading the small blurb at the top of the book's page will let the reader know a couple of situations that are often used in fiction will be used. What it won't prepare you for is the investment you will have in the characters, especially Hannah. ( )
