It is huge in scope and yet the author doesn't let you get lost. The characters are well drawn and grow and mature in a satisfying fashion as the storyline progresses. Absolutely riveting and I tore through it at (for me) breakneck speed. I know there is a re-read in the future! I loved the characters, loved the world building, loved the pacing- just a great book all around. My full review is here, on Hot Stuff for Cool People. I agree with one reviewer who wondered why this wasn't a best seller. This book is phenomenally well-written so you will please forgive my feeble attempt to do it justice in a review. It makes it difficult for some of the books I will read later. This story is a sweeping epic and I pray for a sequel. Keiran and Ash come from very different backgrounds but are literally thrown into prison together by a powerful god that gains his power by swallowing the magic/talents of others. When they escape they begin a physical journey, a love affair, and action and adventure, all while grappling with racial prejudice and bigotry. It is so refreshing to see a fantasy novel set in a unique setting (the Wild West) rather than in European castles and farms. Again, it is a fantastic story, but all the better for Hajicek's deft writing skill. Can't wait to read more from him. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
Imprisioned for 'inflammatory writings' by the totalitarian Theocracy, shy intellectual Ashleigh Trine figures his story's over. But when he meets Kieran Trevarde, a hard-hearted gunslinger with a dark magic lurking in his blood, Ash finds that necessity makes strange heroes... and love can change the world. A steampunk adventure with some intriguing mythology. The romance was a little too sweet for my taste, and I wasn't particularly attached to either character but this story was a decent way to pass time with. ( )
