Although I loved seeing more of Christine this time, and I like the characters, and I know their relationship is new, there was still too much distrust for me to really enjoy Threshold the way I wanted to. I'll chalk it up to their internalized conflicts, this time, and hope that isn't a continuing theme in the series. ( ) The second book is even better than the first one! Whyborne is still my absolute favorite character in this series, and watching him embrace his newfound power is so exciting. By now, I’ve come to love Griffin, too, and I really liked the way we got to know a bit more about his past in this installment. And Christine is just plain awesome - she’s possibly the strongest female supporting character EVER! Who would have thought I’d find one of those in a historical MM romance series? The mystery here was every bit as nicely crafted as in the prequel. The ‘yayhos’ were fucking creepy - at first they gave off this kinda old-school hostile-extraterrestrial vibe, what with their mind-control, experiments on humans and such (stitched-up zombies! brains in jars!), but then the creepy factor intensified even more when it was revealed they resembled walking SHRIMPS! The plot twists were unpredictable and kept me on the edge of my seat. In the background, Whyborne and Griffin’s romance is developing really well - there's a spot of jealously here as well as some sexy times. Hawk’s writing style doesn’t disappoint. This one definitely going on my favorites shelf. Whyborne, Griffin, and Christine set off from Widdershins to investigate strange occurrences happening at a mine in Threshold Mountain. In many ways, this book was even creepier than the first one. The author really amps up the horror, and long before the secret is even revealed, the mystery surrounding Threshold kept me in both dread and suspense. And I could not predict what it would turn out to be! What was revealed was both horrifying and over the top, and although I knew from the first book that it would involve the supernatural, I didn't expect this! Honestly, the sheer idea of this particular supernatural element was really cheesy and weird, but somehow it suited this quirky book, and the author manages to pull it off incredibly well. Despite the scary bits, there is also plenty of humour. This being Whyborne's first time stepping outside of his hometown, there's plenty of comedy in his reactions to the mining town and interactions with its inhabitants. There were parts where I literally laughed out loud, which is rare for me when reading. Christine also provides some great moments -- and is quickly shaping up to be one of my favourite side characters in a series. The relationship between Whyborne and Griffin is put to the test as Griffin's ex shows up as a major character involved in the mystery, but ultimately, the romance in this book is as sweet as ever. I'm really amazed by how much adventure, comedy, horror, romance, and bizarre supernatural elements that Jordan L. Hawk manages to put into this little book, and still weave an incredibly engaging and heartwarming tale. This is definitely an author to look out for. Introverted scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne wants nothing more than to live quietly with his lover, ex-Pinkerton detective Griffin Flaherty. Unfortunately, Whyborne's railroad tycoon father has other ideas, namely hiring Griffin to investigate mysterious events at a coal mine. Whyborne, Griffin, and their friend Christine travel to Threshold Mountain, a place of dark legend even before the mine burrowed into its heart. A contingent of Pinkertons--including Griffin's ex-lover Elliot--already guard the mine. But Griffin knows better than anyone just how unprepared the detectives are to face the otherworldly forces threatening them. Soon, Whyborne and Griffin are on the trail of mysterious disappearances, deadly accidents, and whispered secrets. Is Elliot an ally, or does he only want to rekindle his relationship with Griffin? And if so, how can Whyborne possibly hope to compete with the stunningly handsome Pinkerton--especially when Griffin is hiding secrets about his past? For in a town where friends become enemies and horror lurks behind a human mask, Whyborne can't afford to trust anything--including his own heart. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
